THOMASVILLE- The Thomasville City School Orchestra Program delighted audiences on Sunday, February 25th with their side-by-side concert with the Tallahassee Youth Orchestra in Ruby Diamond Concert Hall. MacIntyre Park Middle School and Thomasville High School students began working on the music in January. This collaboration brings together students from the Tallahassee Youth Orchestra who meet weekly for rehearsals. The students in the Orchestra Program of Thomasville City School prepare the music and the two groups combine on concert day. Dr. Kasia Bugaj, String Music Education professor at Florida State University, and Mr. Will Whitehead are dynamic, lively, and energetic conductors with the TYO program. Dr. Sally Hernandez, MPMS and THS Orchestra Director, shared the podium and conducted a piece for each group, Interme.zzo and Chamber. A week before the concert, Dr. Hernandez and Dr. Bugaj traveled to work with the other conductor’s group. Performing with different conductors gives students a diverse musical perspective.
Principal violist of the chamber orchestra, Macy Gaines said of the experience, “I learned how to lead and communicate with my fellow musicians.”
Florida State University violin professor Corinne Stillwell, performed Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy as the guest artist with the TYO Symphony, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd. Senior violinist, Cruz Pozo, described her playing as “sophisticated and beautiful.”
The side-by-side concert between the Thomasville City School Orchestra Program and the Tallahassee Youth Orchestra was a resounding success, showcasing the dedication and talent of the young musicians involved. The collaboration provided a platform for them to grow musically and share their love of music with the community.
