Pilgrims - English settlers who wanted to practice their religion freely.  They watned to separate from the Church of England.  Called separatists.  They became outcasts in England and were persecuted.

Pilgrims moved to the Netherlands in order to practice tier religion. They missed theEnglish way of life.  They didn't want their children growing up "Dutch."

September 1620, 100 men and women sailed on a ship, the Mayflower, and landed on the shore of Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Before going ashore, they decided to estblish rules - Mayflower Compact.  Stated that they will all work together to survive.

Named their colony Plymouth.

First winter was very harsh.  1/2 of the settlers died.  Received help from Native Americans.  Squanto - a Wampanoag Indian - showed them how to plant seeds and grow crops (corn, beans, pumpkins)

Thankful for the first good harvest, the Pilgrims set aside a day for Thanksgiving.
