the road to success is paved with following rules
1.        I expect my students to come to class prepared.  They must have a 3 ring binder of at
least 1” width (no paper duo-tang folders or spiral notebooks as these will not hold
everything I pass out throughout the year).  They will also need plenty of pencils and/or
pens throughout the school year, as well as plenty of college ruled notebook paper.
   2.     I expect my students to come to class wide awake (sleeping will not be tolerated) and
ready to work, ready to read out loud, ready to work with a partner or in a small group,
ready to participate in class discussions, and respectful enough to listen quietly when others
           are reading or speaking.
   3.     I expect my students to do their own work.  It is far better for them to try to do an
assignment on their own and perhaps not do well on it than to copy another’s work and
learn nothing from doing so.  Cheating will not be tolerated.
   4.     I expect my students to be on time to my class.  On time for my class means they are in
their seats working on the activity written on the chalkboard when the tardy bell rings.  If
they are walking through the door or up walking around the room talking to other
students, they are tardy and will have to serve a teacher’s detention after school
(within 2 days).  If they have a written excuse from the office or another teacher, their
tardy is excused and no detention will have to be served.
Chronic tardiness may also result in I.S.S.  Failure to keep
a teacher’s detention will result in additional disciplinary action.
   5.     I expect my students to display a positive, respectful attitude towards both their fellow
students and me at all times.  Failure to do so will result in them being sent into the hall or
the center of the pod until such time that I can leave the class to conference with the
student.  If disrespectful, disruptive, or aggressive/ hostile behavior continues, attempts will
be made to contact parents and/or the student will be written up and sent to the office.
   6.     I expect my students to speak appropriately to their fellow classmates and me.  I tell them
that they should talk in such a way as would be expected if they were at their grandma’s
house or in church.  Foul language/obscenities, sexually explicit and/or disrespectful talk
           will not be tolerated.
   7.     I expect my students to raise their hands before speaking out.
   8.     I expect my students to remain quiet while others are working or speaking.
   9.     I expect my students to keep their hands to themselves.  Touching others, their belongings
or taking things that do not belong to them is adolescent and will not be tolerated.  Stealing
or suspicion of theft can result in our school resource police officer being called
into the classroom.  We have far too much to accomplish in the 180 days they are with me
and time dealing with this kind of behavior is time wasted.
   10.   I expect my students to remain seated at all times unless sharpening pencils, throwing trash
away, asking me questions about the work they are doing, turning in work to the
assignment trays or given permission to do otherwise.
   11.   I expect my students to learn to think rather than react.  The act of fighting is in a sense
telling the person they are fighting with that they are worth getting sent home for 10
days of O.S.S. and getting zeros in their classes.  No student I have ever taught would come
right out and say that to another student they are having problems with; therefore, fighting
is self-destructive and damaging to their grades. Avoiding trouble - talking
things out with me - may deflate the situation as well as teach them problem
solving techniques they can use throughout their lives.  Any student who honestly wants to
avoid trouble is welcome to talk to me at any time, and I will help them think of alternative
ways of handling the problem instead of fighting.
   12.   I expect my students to remain in my class for the entire class period.  Bathroom breaks,
going to the locker to get forgotten books, etc., or going to other classrooms to get things will        result in after school detention.

   13.    I expect my students to leave their CDs and CD player or their
Walkman at home or in their car.  If brought into my class, it will be turned over to an
administrator and your child might not get it back until the end of the school year.

14.  Cell phones and beepers are to remain out of sight and turned off from 8 o'clock a.m. till 3 o'clock      p.m.  They are to be used only outside and only before or after school.
15.  Students, upon entering my classroom, are to remain in the room.  They are not to leave the room in order to go into the hall and visit with friends.  The only exception is if the let me know they are going to the restroom prior to the start of class.

I am confident that if your child understands and follows these procedures and rules, their school year in my English class will be trouble-free, productive and successful - as well as enjoyable.  Should you have any questions about the information in this letter, please feel free to call me at
225-2634 and leave a message with the receptionist, and I will get back with you as soon as possible.  I look forward to meeting you at some point during the school year and working with you to ensure your child's well being and success here at Thomasville High School.

"How am I going to be graded?" This is quite likely one of the most often asked questions I hear from my students at the beginning of each school year.  The table below will show how each type of assignment is given a percentage - all of which adds up to the total of your grade.

The Importance of Books

We will read many books in both my tenth grade and advanced tenth grade classes this year.  Quite a bit of the reading will take place in class; however, when a textbook or outside novel is assigned to you it is imperative that you keep up with and take care of them.  If you lose them or damage them, there is a price you will have to pay for the loss or damage of the book.  What follows is a list of the book prices for my classes:

 > Elements of Literature Fourth Course
     - $50
  >Outside novels - range in price
    from $6 to
over $15
   > McDougal Littell, Language of Literature

10th grade - $61

*There are varied fees for damage to books as well.  Fees depend on the amount of damage done to the book and what book was damaged.

Please take care of the books you're given to use.  They are an important part of your success in class.
