Why Join Y Club? Mrs. White and Mrs. Niswonger are starting what hopes to be the biggest Y Club yet for the Thomasville City Schools. The mission of Y Club (sponsored by the state YMCA) is to provide programs and opportunities for our youth which promote self esteem, leadership skills and a sense of moral and civic responsibility. Members are expected to organize meetings, recruit other participants, create service projects, and much more. Y Club is open to all middle school and high school students who are willing to be dedicated to the club. Besides doing local
deeds, the Y Club takes several trips, including the Youth Assembly and
the Georgia United Nations Assembly. Mrs. White recently took the 9th
grade government students to the Youth Assembly, which was located at
the State Capitol in Atlanta, Georgia. Here, students had the chance to
discuss current state issues with elected officials, state
administrators, and other students throughout the state of Georgia. At
the assembly, bills were debated and some were passed on to the House or
Senate.
Brian Miller, 9th grader at the Scholars Academy, says, I learned what the process was for passing a bill while at the Youth Assembly. The newly formed Y Club also plans on attending the Georgia United Nations Assembly on February 28th, March 1st, and March 2nd in Athens, Georgia. Groups are formed which represent different nations while learning about its history, culture, economy, and government. Groups then debate and collaborate about the different nations present while dressed up in native costumes. There is a scholarship program for students in need, and fundraising is possible. The deadline for the deposit is Friday, January 22nd. Faculty sponsor Mrs. White says, Its a great opportunity for students to have a good time and take an active part in the learning process while still having fun. Meetings will be held monthly.
