To the nurses and teachers who read this, self care and self preservation are critical to your survival. Before saying ‘yes’, there are five questions to ask yourself:
- What purpose does this serve?
- Why are you afraid to say no?
- What else could you do with the time?
- What is stealing my energy?
- How do you refuel?
So where do you go fro here? Think of yourself everyday as a full cup of water (or coffee). Each effort that you make during the day is a drip out of the glass. When the glass is empty, you have nothing left to give for the day. Visualize that, with each action you take, the glass gets lower. Become selective about where you put your time and energy. Make sure that the water in your glass goes toward things that mean something to you, not just to things you feel compelled to say yes to. Identify areas that are draining to your energy (either change your approach, delegate or remove). Target the goals that matter to you. Leave room for what lifts your spirits, take a deep breath and start there…
