| Student Services provides services to students
who have attendance, behavior, personality, and/or learning problems,
and to their parents through casework, group work, or referral to
other resources. Student Services also coordinates student
registration, maintains attendance records and arranges for health
services.

Attendance
|
| Every parent, guardian, or other person
residing in the State of Georgia is required to enroll and send children
in their care and charge between the ages of six and sixteen to a
public or private school.
After twenty days of attendance, children
enrolled in the school system under the age of seven become subject to
compulsory attendance laws.
Legal excuses for absences include:
- A serious illness or death in the immediate
family necessitates absence from school.
- Personal illness and when attendance in
school would endanger their health or the health of others.
- Verified religious observances.
- Conditions render attendance impossible or
hazardous to their health or safety.
- A court order or mandate by order of
government agencies, including preinduction physical exam for
service in the armed forces.
- Registering to vote or voting, for a period
not to exceed one day.

FTE-Full
Time Equivalents
|
| FTE is the state funding mechanism based on the
student enrollment and the educational services local school systems
provide for the students. Educational programs are divided into

Home
School
|
| A home school setting allows a parent or guardian
the opportunity to educate their children at home while meeting the
compulsory attendance policy of Georgia.
The parent or guardian must annually submit to
the Director of Student Services of the local school district in which the program
is located a Declaration of Intent to utilize a home study program by
September 1 or within 30 days after a program is established.
Parents or guardians may teach only their own
children in the home study program provided the teaching parent or
guardian possesses at least a high school diploma or a general
education development (GED) equivalency diploma, and the parents or
guardians may employ a tutor who holds at least a high school or a
general education
development (GED) to teach such children.

Alternative
Education
|
Dunlap Educational
Learning Center
915 E. Lester Street
225-2687This alternative education program
serves students in grades 6 through 12. This program was designed to meet the needs of students
whose behaviors significantly impeded their ability to be successful
in a traditional school setting. Students participating in
this program are placed in a more structured setting designed to
meet the needs of the academically and behaviorally challenged
student. Smaller class sizes, individualized instruction,
social skills assessments and training, and the incentive to return
to the traditional setting are contractually offered to these
students and their parents.
EXALT--Extended Alternatives for Learning
through Technology
Cheryl Gonatos, Lead Teacher
This alternative education program is an
innovative model that serves high school students that are at risk
for dropping out of school and those who have already dropped out
and want to return to earn their high school diploma. EXALT
emphasizes community, school, student, and parent responsibility.
