School Councils

School Councils are just one part of the Education Reform Movement.  They were created by Governor Barnes through HB 1187, also known as The A+ Reform Act of 2000.

The purposes of School Councils are to:

Improve and increase parental participation in education;
Improve communication between parents and the community with the school;
Bring schools and communities together in the spirit of cooperation;
Solve difficult education problems;
Share ideas for school improvement;
Provide support for teachers and administrators; and
Advise school leaders.

School Council members should:

Maintain a school-wide perspective;
Participate in monthly School Council meetings;
Participate in training programs;
Act as a link between the Council and the community;
Work to improve student achievement; and
Encourage the participation of parents and others within the school community.

The School Council is made up of:

The principal of the school;
Two teachers elected by the teachers of the school;
Two parents elected by the parents of the school;
One business person selected by the principal, the two teacher members, and the two parent members; and
One business person selected by the Board of Education.
