Dear Harper Friends, If you can read this…..please help us pass this same skill on to our future generations. Owning books is a critical feature of every child’sintellectual development. Reading aloud to children is the single most effective parent practice for enhancing language and literacy development. Many of the students at J.K. Harper Elementary School have confirmed that they do not own any reading materials, nor do many of their family members. Children with books at home are eight times more likely to list reading as one of their favorite activities. Many students are of low socioeconomic status. Purchasing reading materials at retail store prices is not an option or priority for many of our families. Providing books to children is a simple, effective, and inexpensive way to promote language and literacy growth. Harper hopes to combat these literacy hurdles with the Eagles Nest. The purpose of the Eagle’s Nest is to make reading materials accessible to any family regardless of financial status and to promote literacy throughout the community. Because we are asking for $1 per book, we are not permitted to use state or local funds to purchase the inventory. The economic benefit of raising the literacy level in Thomasville would be beneficial to the area. With a higher level of educated and trained work force, industry would have a larger selection of qualified workers from which to select. We need your help to get started. Our goal is to raise enough funds to fill the shelves of the Eagle’s Nest and put local families on the road to good reading habits. A monetary donation of any size can help us to place books in the homes of our families. Please support our efforts. Sincerely, Allan Rodemoyer J.K. Harper Principal |
